The new Cancer Care Centre on Cromwell Street has announced its opening programme of therapies, starting tomorrow (Thursday August 29th).

The new centre, which is a joint project between Western Isles Cancer Care Initiative (WICCI) and Macmillan Cancer Care, offers an informal, comfortable space for people affected by cancer to meet for social functions, moral support and well-being.

Treatments and therapies begin tomorrow with the first sessions of Reiki, offered by trained practitioner Heather Baillie. Reiki is a Japanese healing art that helps calm the mind, eases tension and balances the body’s energies, according to your individual needs.

You don’t have to get undressed for treatment, which can be given sitting or lying down. The practitioner will move their hands across your body, usually starting at your head and working down to your feet, but may focus on particular areas of the body. The aim is to move and balance the energy within and around your body

Reiki sessions are available to book on Thursday 29th August and Thursday 19th September and there are also sessions of oncology massage available on Saturday 7th September, followed by the first Saturday of every month thereafter.

Oncology massage is offered by accredited practitioner Anne McHale. While massage doesn’t treat the cancer itself, it may help reduce the side effects caused by conventional treatments and improve quality of life and wellbeing.

As well as improving physical symptoms, some people with cancer say that having a massage helps them to relax, helps them share feelings in an informal setting and makes them feel more positive about their body.

All the therapy sessions are free of charge and can be booked via the WICCI Centre on 01851 706721.

The Western Isles Cancer Care Initiative (WICCI) is a registered local charity. As a charity we have developed a unique partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support to address needs and provide support for specific issues faced by cancer patients and their families throughout the Western Isles.
