An adventurer walking the whole coast of the UK has appealed for help from the people of Lewis and Harris, after stepping off the ferry in Stornoway on Wednesday (December 5th).

Chris Lewis, an ex-serviceman who has been through challenges since leaving the armed forces, has been trekking the length and breadth of the UK since summer 2017. He’s raising funds for the armed forces charity SSAFA and is accompanied on his walk by his dog, Jet.

He’s decided to remain in the Western Isles for the whole winter, to ensure he covers every inch of the coast, but after suffering a mouth infection and having a tooth removed, Chris has realised that he’s going to need help to make sure he gets through winter safely.

On Sunday (December 8th) he set off from Stornoway to walk up towards Ness, at the same time putting out a plea to islanders to help with the logistics of his island winter.

Chris said: “Good people of Stornoway, I need your help. I cannot physically carry the amount of food needed for our next leg and want to walk every inch of this coast so I’m looking for anyone who may be able to assist with drop offs at chosen points along the route, where I can cut in off the coast and meet you on a road to re-supply.”

He’s asking for people to contact him via his Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/chriswalksuk/or via his website chriswalks.com if they can help.

Apart from the logistics, Chris is setting his sights on a memorable visit to the islands. He’s already walked the coasts of Barra and the Uists, and now intends to visit every cove and bay in Lewis and Harris.

He said: “It’s always been on my mind that I’ve wanted to be in the Outer Hebrides and here it is – yeah we’re going to be here through the winter and it’s going to be hard work, but it’s all been hard work!

“All of a sudden here I am arriving in Stornoway to go and see what I think will be possibly some of the most beautiful places in the United Kingdom. I cannot tell you how happy I am.”
