Gale force winds on Saturday (March 2nd) and into Sunday could mean disruption to ferries – but it’s not Storm Freya.

The Met Office has named Storm Freya, the sixth named storm of the season, which is due to affect much of England and Wales at the weekend, but a separate weather system will bring strong winds to the Western Isles.

CalMac has warned of possible short-notice cancellation to the 10.30am service from Ullapool on Saturday, and to the service from Stornoway at 2.30pm. Sound of Harris ferries are liable to disruption throughout the weekend.

With the Tarbert to Uig service currently operating as a foot-passenger only service, while rope work is completed on the Tarbert linkspan, this means there could be a time over the weekend where no vehicles can reach or leave the isles of Lewis and Harris.

Winds are expected to build from 12 noon on Saturday and to reach a peak around 3am on Sunday.
