An Lanntair Arts Centre in Stornoway was evacuated this evening (Friday March 29th) after a major flood which affected the building from the inside.

The venue was busy with a sold-out special event in the restaurant and a showing of the popular film The Mule, starring Clint Eastwood, both under way.

Everyone was cleared from the building as the situation developed.  The flood is said by onlookers to have involved hot water.

Fire brigade sources report that a burst hot water pipe in the ladies toilets caused a water flow from the ground floor. The fire alarm was activated to clear the building, which was then closed to allow for the clean-up operation.

And the centre management are now “pleased to say that we hope to be open around midday tomorrow.  There has been a flood which the team have now contained. Efforts to get the building up and running are continuing.

“If you planned to visit us tomorrow for any of the many activities we had scheduled please keep an eye on social media for the latest news.”

The arts centre’s management team posted on social media just before 9pm that the building has closed tonight due to ‘an emergency situation.’

Pictures posted by customers show crowds outside on the pavement and nearby street this evening.
