Western Isles athletes beat the field today (Sunday April 28th) with an impressive showing at the first Scottish Athletics under 17 North East Division event in Aberdeen.

The Island Select team comprises members of Stornoway Running and Athletics Club, together with athletes from North and South Uist, Eriskay, Orkney and Shetland.

They’ve been supported in the series of competition events by the Transocean travel fund and by Lewis and Harris Sports Council, who ensured they were able to travel to the mainland to compete in a league of eight.

Early haar soon cleared to leave a bright sunny day of competition and some equally dazzling performances from island athletes.

High placings and personal best times were rewarded when the under-17 team were placed first overall in the event, beating Inverness into second place, while the under-13 and under-15 teams were a very close second behind Inverness.

The eight-team league continues in a month’s time in Inverness.
