Stornoway Coastguard’s Maritime Operations Centre are this afternoon (Sunday May 12th) co-ordinating a safety operation in Lochmaddy marina, where a yacht is aground.
The 11.4 metre sailing yacht’s two passengers called for help at 4.30pm, when she grounded as the tide fell.
Coastguard Rescue Teams from Benbecula and Griminish were sent to the scene and the Barra RNLI lifeboat put on standby, in case the two people needed to be removed from the vessel.
In fact, they were able to reach safety themselves and are now ashore.
The yacht is now high and dry and not expected to refloat until around 11pm tonight.
Barra lifeboat has been stood down and the CRT volunteers will return to the scene at 10.30pm to ensure that all are safe as the vessel refloats.
The Coastguard have also provided contacts for local divers so that checks can be made tomorrow, to ensure the yacht is seaworthy before she resumes her voyage.
