Urras Eaglais na h-Aoidhe – the Ui Church Trust – is holding its annual Open Day on Saturday, 27th July from 10.00am until 4.00pm.

On Saturday 29th June, a group of 11 directors and Friends of Ui Church wielded wheelbarrows and shovels to fill the numerous rabbit holes in the graveyard at the Church.

For the last few years the Braighe has been inundated with rabbits, but mainly as a result of the impact of disease last year, there are currently none around.

However, the holes they left were a serious trip hazard and with so many people visiting the site it was agreed that the holes should be filled in.

The weather was perfect – dry and bright with enough wind to keep the midges at bay.  John Macleod of Breedons donated a load of quarry dust and John Don of Heb Ex Facilities donated a load of topsoil.  Everyone got to work and the whole thing was done more quickly than expected.

We are sure that further filling will be needed especially as some of the holes seemed to go down to ‘Middle Earth’, but at least it was a start.  Also rabbits will almost certainly return to the Braighe in the future ……. but such is life!

Simon Riley, chairman of Urras Eaglais na h-Aoidhe, said he was delighted with the turnout; he thanked everyone for their hard work and Breedons and John Don for their generous contributions to the project.
