Machining – Metal Lathe work

An introduction to metal turning using a centre lathe. Produce turned components to given tolerances using various methods. Understand how to accurately measure turned dimensions using a range of measuring instruments.

Ulpan Gaelic for Beginners

Ùlpan targets conversation reinforced with reading and writing. Students
learn through the repetition of key structures and through speaking and understanding. The emphasis is on use! Students will be given the opportunity to work towards SQA accreditation.

Authentic Indian Cooking with Manoj

Curry - It’s an umbrella term used by the Asians for gravy – which is made with a combination of spices and Herbs. In these classes we will focus on some ingredients that make these, the use of them, the flavours & the combination, so by the end of it you can try your own combinations. You will learn different recipes plus substitutes that you can try to make your own.

About Manoj – Manoj is from Delhi and has spent many years perfecting his craft. Up until June this year, Manoj worked at a Chef at the County Hotel
in Stornoway.  

Manoj has embarked on a computing degree at Lews Castle College UHI but still continues to develop his culinary skills by creating and developing beautiful Indian curries.

Upholstery with Morag Duncan

Are you looking to create something special? Want to learn a new skill? If the answer to either or both of these is yes you can come and get creative with a short upholstery night class at the college, with tutor Morag Duncan who six years ago turned a hobby of many years into a business she now runs in Stornoway.

The classes are open to all with an interest in recovering an item of furniture, also offering a chance to gain new skills or improve existing ones, you can go at your own pace and the item can also be individual, (if they can fit in the door of the class room!)

From Reformation to Disruption: An Introduction with Catriona Murray

This four week course will familiarise students with the events which led to the formation of the Protestant Church in Europe, and the spread of Protestantism to the Gàidhealtachd. It will also explore the development of the Protestant Church in the Highlands and Islands, and the events leading up to the establishment of the Free Church of Scotland in the Disruption of 1843.

NPA Harris Tweed

Do you have an interest in the Harris Tweed industry, fashion or textiles design? This course offers the opportunity to explore your creative side through a range of specially delivered units of study that prepare you for progression into a creative discipline of your choice. You will explore:

  • The history of Harris Tweed, one of the last indigenous cloths.

  • Design ideas, draft, warp and weave your own tweed.

  • Visit mills and weavers who work on the cloth.

  • Engage in troubleshooting sessions on both the single and double width looms.

  • Study the marketing of tweed items and make your own product withsessions on selling and pricing.

Photography

Are you interested in learning about how to improve your own photography? The aim of this course is to help people learn about some photographic theory, how to improve their landscape and people photography in an informal and relaxed approach. The tutor is Mairi M Martin who studied Professional Photography at Glasgow College of Building and Printing. Mairi’s parents were from Lewis and she now lives at the family home in Doune, Carloway.

This Internet Safety short course will teach you the skills and knowledge required to work safely and responsibly online, in the context of activities that are routine and familiar.

Over the last 10 years there have been huge changes in internet use, particularly the increased use of social networking and the growing incidence of cyberbullying. There is now a sharper focus on personal safety, online behaviour and etiquette, social networking and the use of mobile devices.

Learn about the risks of working online and how to safeguard yourself and others. We’ll also look at dealing with unwanted communications, protecting against identity theft, and protecting systems against viruses.

Join us and learn to interact online with confidence.

This Autumn, be bold, take that Cello you bought that’s still in its case and join other beginners just like you, determined to embark upon new discoveries and hidden talents in a world you will create through discovering music.

No one is unteachable, that has been my attitude to teaching music. I myself started young with music, learning the cello as my main instrument first, but then as it so often happens, life gets in the way. I came back to music as a 35 year-old learning amongst 4 year olds and I loved it. So it
is my aim to remind you all it’s never too late and you’re never too old. Learning the cello with me you’ll be in good company! All you need to do is bring yourself and your cello and music stand down to the college, I’ll provide the music and let the playing commence!

Art Class with Kenneth Burns

Another opportunity to get creative with a paint palette and brushes, as the nights draw in, with a series of art/drawing and painting night classes, with painter/art tutor Kenneth “Kenny” Burns. Now entering its third series, the classes are open to all with an interest in art, whatever your knowledge and experience, offering a chance to gain new skills or hone and exchange existing ones. The pace will be individually led, though guided with gentle tuition. Explore the properties and uses of new types art materials (as presented and demonstrated by Kenneth), learn the various techniques and theories, developing drawings and paintings from inspiration, through execution and completion of your own artwork. The subject matter and materials can also be individual, as art and creativity are individual and fun. Surprise yourself and discover your own artistic abilities, gaining confidence and a sense of self empowerment in the process. Indeed discover that the only real rules in art are those of science and nature. Interested by this, then join the classes and all will be explained.

Sewing Skills

If you’re a complete sewing beginner or haven’t sewn for a long time this
is the course for you. You’ll receive a thorough introduction to using your sewing machine and learn a variety of basic sewing techniques which
you’ll be able to apply to a range of homeware and garment projects. You’ll also get an introduction to understanding sewing patterns and complete projects which will put your new skills into practice. You’ll need to bring your own sewing machine with you and that way you’ll really get to know how your own machine works.

Fine Art and Design Appreciation -(Explore The Theories of Fine Art and Design)

Have you ever wondered why some art and design is more pleasing than others? Could there be such a thing as good art and design?
Would you like to learn more about art and design?
Then this new night class is an opportunity gain an understanding and appreciation of fine art and design, with painter/art tutor Kenneth “Kenny” Burns.

The classes are open to all with an interest in art and design, and a desire to understand and appreciate what one sees and accepts as art. There will be a study of the various “movements” and “schools” of art and design, from all periods of art history. We will explore ideas, theories and principles of a wide range of aspects of art and design, including composition, colour, form and function.

As ever these classes will be delivered in a relaxed and informal educational climate of fun, each participant will be encouraged to enjoy, understand and appreciate art and design as a vital aspect life itself.

Basic Computing

Are you worried about your lack of computing skills? Do you feel you’re falling behind but don’t quite know where to start?

With more and more of life taking place online, from banking to shopping to just catching up with friends and family on social media, there’s a whole new world to explore and it doesn’t need to be a scary place.

Our basic Introduction to computing course runs for nine weeks and will equip you with the skills and the confidence you need, in a relaxed, informal setting. Join us and open up to a new world of possibilities.

Jewellery Making

Suitable for complete beginners or anyone who has a basic level of jewellery making skills
The classes will be relaxed and fun with no more than10 students per class so you will have lots of one-on-one tuition. We will focus on developing piercing (sawing out shapes in metal) and soldering skills; basic skills, which when mastered, will enable you to advance on to more ambitious projects. You will learn about the different working properties of silver, gold and platinum. We will be working with copper and brass - inexpensive metals with very similar working properties to precious metals. Working with them will enable you to build up a level of skill and will give you the confidence to advance to silver when you feel ready. By the end of the 20 weeks you will have produced at least two finished pieces of jewellery. You will not need to bring any tools, metal or solder with you that will be provided.

The RYA SRC radio operator qualification authorises the holder to operate a short range marine VHF radio with digital Selective Calling (DSC) on a vessel and is a legal requirement for marine VHF users throughout the world.

Economic Issues: An Introduction with Patrick MacLeod

This Unit introduces candidates to fundamental issues in economics with a particular emphasis on the business environment. Candidates will learn about the basic economic problem and how the consumer and other economic agents address this problem. Candidates are introduced to the operation of markets and actions that can be taken to help avoid market failure. The Unit introduces the theory of National Income and the circular flow of income model.

Supernatural Folklore of the Hebrides with Catriona Murray

If you have ever wanted to know more about the Hebridean Otherworld, this is the course for you. This is a practical evening class aimed at individuals who have an interest in doing hair and would like to build basic skills. It would suit anyone wanting to improve skills for their own personal use or for those working in the Care sector where they maybe required to carry out basic hairdressing.

A fun, relaxed class where you can learn the secrets of professional interior designers and wow your family and friends with your creative flair! The skills you will learn also translate into many other areas of life e.g. Fashion, Make Up, Food presentation, Gardening, Up cycling, Drawing and Painting to name a few.

Be inspired to use colour with confidence by discovering the Colour Wheel and be surprised by the way that colours can affect and influence us.

Also by learning the 6 principles of good design you will have the tools you need to achieve a harmonious balanced look in your home and the ability to inject life into any room be it classic or contemporary

You will have ample opportunity to develop your own style and explore ideas by creating mood boards, always a good chance to share with, and learn from, the rest of the class, usually over coffee and cake !

This class is ideal for those feeling overwhelmed when faced with decorating a new build or simply struggling to choose curtains and cushions, as well as those who are just looking for a fun evening class for the autumn months. No tests, no pressure !
