Two days of competition at the North district athletics championships in Inverness on Friday and Saturday (May 10th and 11th) saw a shower of medals for Stornoway athletes.

A squad of 31 athletes did the island proud, with excellent performances across the board and podium places showing the rewards.

Sarah Maciver was a triple gold medal winner, with a gold on Friday – in a 200metre final featuring no less than four SRAC runners– and a second on Saturday in the long jump, where she also jumped a new personal best.

Unbelievably she went on to get her third gold in the 800 metres, with team-mates Kyla and Megan getting silver and bronze for a Stornoway clean sweep.

On Friday Iain Matheson and Finlay Macleod took silver and bronze in the boys 200m, Abbie Stewart gained bronze in the under 13 girls 1500m and, in what was arguably the run of the day, Jordan Nicolson took silver in the under 13 boys 1500m, after a race that saw him out in front three times in the final lap, including for most of the home straight, to narrowly miss gold.

Rachel Murray almost made the medal tally six in one day, but missed out on bronze by one 100th of a second in a photo finish in the girls u15 1500m.

On Saturday the 300metres brought two personal bests and two more medals – silver for Lewis MacLean and bronze for Gemma Macritchie in their respective events.

And there was more to come, with gold for Iain Matheson in the 800 metres, silver for Angus Morrison in shot putt and a second bronze for Gemma Macritchie, this time in the long-jump.
