A squad of young Lewis football players were up early this morning (Friday May 17th) to catch the ferry for the mainland on the first leg of their journey to Kirkwall in Orkney.

The team will be competing in the North Counties U12s seven-a-side competition in Kirkwall as part of Lewis and Harris YFA’s active football development programme. Some of their travel costs have been met by generous sponsorship from Lewis Builders and DMK Autos, while more has been raised by bag-packing and other fundraising ventures.

Saturday also sees U9s and U11s football festivals at the Smith Avenue pitch, with under-nine’s playing four-a-side and under-11s seven-a-side.Lochs is the organising club for those activities.

And there’s been more news of success for young footballers at Back Football Club, where regular player 16-year-old Adam Mackinnon has signed a modern apprenticeship contract to join Ross County Football Club full-time for two years.

Adam has been a regular attender at Ross County’s Youth Academy, travelling from his home in Tong most weekends for the past two years.  An S4 pupil at The Nicolson Institute, he will be continuing his studies part-time at Dingwall Academy.
