On Saturday 16th May, the Lews Castle Grounds will play host to the 9th Women’s Cancer Challenge 5k, the biggest sporting participation event in the Outer Hebrides. The WCC is a fundraiser for the award-winning Lewis branch of Cancer Research UK.
Cancer Research UK funds research into a whole range of cancers that affect both men and women.
The event promises to bring together a big group of ladies in the gorgeous Castle Grounds, for an afternoon of laughter and fundraising. Organiser, Tony Wade, said: “The event is held in the simplest way possible, in order to maximise the contribution to the charity.”
Rain or shine, you can always count on it being a special day, “and it is really the sheer fact that so many women have turned up, no matter what the weather, to support it that has made it such a happy and successful event.”
In its ninth year, you might be wondering what keeps driving Kirsty and Tony Wade to devote so much time to organising the race. The answer is quite simple: “We continue to organise the challenge every year because every year we know somebody who has been affected by cancer, or whose family continues to suffer from the devastating effects of losing someone to this disease, and we suspect that is why so many people come to support the event too.”
They really want you to join in again: “come along and walk, run or chat your way around the Castle Grounds course again this year. Your efforts make such a difference.”
Over the years, the WCC has raised over £80,000, which has helped make incredible advances. The Cancer Research UK website states that new figures this year show that death rates for breast, bowel, lung and prostate cancer combined have fallen by almost a third in the last 20 years, thanks to research - but more still needs to be done.
A last comment from Tony and Kirsty: “Please come along again on May 16th, with your usual smiles, bringing the cheery atmosphere with you, and please also bring your mum or sister or friend or daughter or neighbour or work colleague, because every single contribution makes a difference.
“Please come even if the weather is bad, because cancer doesn’t stop - even when it’s raining.”
