Tributes are being paid to Donald Macdonald, the former Harris councillor, who passed away suddenly yesterday (Sunday).

Mr Macdonald, from Scalpay, was 68 years old.

Elected to the Comhairle in 1990, serving until 2007, Mr Macdonald was councillor for the Scalpay, Bays, and Harris East electoral wards.

Former colleague Morag Munro said that she was 'shocked and saddened' by Mr Macdonald's passing.

"We were a very constructive partnership in the Comhairle, when there were the East and West wards," she said.

"Donald was so active in the many projects he campaigned on, none more so than the Scalpay Bridge, where he was pivotal."

She added: "Harris has lost someone who had its interest passionately at heart."

Convener Norman A Macdonald said: "Donald was a good man who cared and worked for his community tirelessly.

"He was a very active participant in all of the Comhairle’s processes and served as Vice-Chair of Transportation, Chair of Contract Services and also Chair of the Commercial Operations Board.

"Donald was a key driver of the Scalpay Bridge project and many other beneficial works for his community.

"Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this very sad time."

A worship service will be held in the Free Church Continuing, Scalpay, tomorrow evening (Tuesday) at 9pm and the funeral will take place on Wednesday morning at 11am.
