Mission successful - the rig will now be welded onto the deck of the Hawk (Pic by CJ Macdonald)

The Transocean Winner oil rig has been successfully loaded onto the Hawk for transportation away from Lewis.

The damaged rig will now be welded onto the deck of the Hawk before being taken to Malta, where damaged tanks will be repaired, allowing the platform to remain upright without requiring a constant flow of high-pressure air.

That process is expected to take 'a few days'.

She will then be taken to a yard in Turkey for decommissioning.

The 17,000-tonne Transocean Winner ran aground at Dalmore on August 8 after breaking free from a tow to Turkey where it was due to be scrapped.

About two weeks later the rig was refloated and moved to Broad Bay.
