Colin and Nicky Cameron (holding the counters), and some members of the Lewis committee

The Cancer Research UK Isle of Lewis committee has taken ownership of two brand new counters, thanks to a donation from Nicky and Colin Cameron, of Cameron’s Chip Shop.

Vice-Secretary of the committee, Anne Macphail, told “I posted a photo on our Facebook page which showed us counting donations after we had gone collecting from house to house.

“We counted £10,000 by hand in one evening, and it took us about five hours in total.

“Nicky Cameron got in touch saying she couldn’t believe we had counted £10,000 by hand and said she wanted to buy us coin sorting machines.

“I thought that was a really great gesture, because usually it’s us going to businesses looking for help – not the other way round.”

Anne said that since many of the committee were old, the new counters would make life a lot easier for the ladies.

She added: “Up until now we have spent a lot of time counting money by hand. It takes ages.

“Some people think that the cancer committee is only about fun events and the Ladies’ Lunch, but a lot of work goes on behind the scenes.”
