A storekeeper from the Western Isles has been selected as a finalist at the Scottish Health Awards 2016.

David Nicolson, community equipment service storekeeper at Western Isles Hospital, has been shortlisted for the Unsung Hero award as a result of the reliable, responsive and innovative delivery service that he provides to patients and their families.

David is constantly on the lookout for new ideas and equipment and has been praised for always going above and beyond what is expected of him, regardless of any logistical issues he may face.

All nominees fought off stiff competition from across the country to secure their place at this year’s award ceremony next week.

NHS Western Isles Chief Executive Gordon Jamieson said: “It is excellent news that David has been shortlisted for the ‘Unsung Hero’ award this year. I have witnessed David’s commitment to serve his fellow human beings first-hand, when I shadowed our Occupational Therapy Department for a day.

“David is highly thought-of and respected by his colleagues for his hard work and commitment, well above and beyond the call of duty. David is a perfect example of a member of staff who is patient-centred at all times, always considering new and innovative ways to improve the service he provides in response to patient need.

“To have been shortlisted for a Scottish Health Award is an incredible achievement for David, and well deserved. I’d like to wish him all the best of luck at the awards ceremony in November, and to personally thank him for his invaluable contribution to sustaining and improving health services in the Western Isles.”

Every year, the Scottish Health Awards recognise and reward the dedicated NHS staff, support workers, volunteers and specialist teams who go the extra mile to provide outstanding patient care.

There are 16 award categories in total, including the Nurse Award, the Volunteers Award, and the Doctor Award, and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on Thursday 3 November at the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh.
