OnTime Computer Services of Rigs Road, Stornoway, has become the first islands-based firm to sign up as an accredited Living Wage employer.

This was achieved through Scottish Living Wage Accreditation (http://scottishlivingwage.org/accredited)

OnTime Director Donald Macaskill said his company’s decision to seek accreditation was “not just about money, not just about us, it’s also about raising awareness of the living wage so that, hopefully, other employers will see the benefits of raising standards for their employees and also the potential of gaining additional business. “

He said the scheme was intended to make sure that people take home more money at the end of the day and became less dependent on in-work Government benefits like tax credits which can be miscalculated and leave people struggling after changes in rates or following the annual reviews.

“It’s called a Living Wage and it’s about enabling people to have a wage which they can live off.  They work hard for their money so I think it’s fair that they get a wage that reflects that.”

Donald and his team were presented with their accreditation by Western Isles MSP Alasdair Allan who said: “I would like to congratulate Donald and the team at On Time for leading by example and becoming the first islands-based firm to sign up as accredited Living Wage employers.
“With the current levels of in-work poverty, employers can make a real difference by paying their staff the Living Wage.  All the evidence shows that, as well as being good for society and individuals, it also benefits the businesses who pay it, with Living Wage employers able to point to increased productivity and reduced staff absences and turnover.  It also sends a strong signal to customers about fairness by showcasing that organisation’s commitment to be an ethical employer.

“I hope other island employers will follow suit and sign up to be Living Wage employers.”

Alasdair Allan is an accredited Living Wage MSP, which means he meets all the requirements for an accredited Living Wage Employer, and, in addition, works with the Scottish Living Wage Accreditation Initiative to promote the Living Wage in his constituency.

Intermedia Services (Stornoway) Ltd, publishers of EVENTS newspaper and welovestornoway.com, is also going through the process of becoming an accredited Living Wage Employer.
