Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MSP Alasdair Allan has welcomed the news that Loganair is to operate flights “in its own right” from next year onwards.

Loganair yesterday announced plans to end its franchise agreement with Flybe as of 31st August 2017.

The changes will not affect the Scottish Government’s Air Discount Scheme which will continue to run as normal.

The company currently operates flights from Stornoway, Benbecula and Barra airports to the mainland, as well as the inter-islands service between Stornoway and Benbecula.

Alasdair Allan commented: “I welcome this commitment from Loganair and hope this represents an investment in the future.

"The most common reasons people get in touch with me about planes are usually either about delays, or the often baffling pricing structure of island flights.

"I hope that, operating on its own, Loganair should have more flexibility to address these issues and give increased accountability to their island customers.

“I understand that Loganair have said routes are not at risk. I would hope for greater clarity on this point when the company announces developments to its route network later this week.

“I very much hope this new period in Loganair’s history will be a successful one in terms of delivering improvements to island services and I wish the company well with their new endeavour.”
