Strong support from the chairman of Ross County Football Club, Mr Roy MacGregor, enabled the raising of £9372.73 for Bethesda Hospice as a result of a football game and associated events on Friday August 4.

The game between a Ross County Under-21 team and a Lewis & Harris Select team took place on the Goathill Road ground in Stornoway and was well-supported and strongly contested.

It was organised by Kenny Maciver of STS Taxis.

He says: “As it was the 25th anniversary of Bethesda Hospice, I set out to try and get an event which would raise a reasonable amount of much-need money for the hospice.

“I used contact from my time Lewis & Harris football to see if I could get a football team to play a local Select.”

He explains that Roy MacGregor offered a squad from Ross County – although their first team was already committed elsewhere. The Under-21 squad came over and “Mr MacGregor came over with them and took a question & answer session later in the evening.

“I am very grateful to all that took part in any way to ake the event such a success. The event secured a four-figure sponsorship amount, along with strong backing from Mr MacGregor and also from Mr Alex O’Henley who was MC for the evening.”

Combined an auction and buffet in the evening, the game helped push to total – after expenses – past £9000 and the final cheque was presented to DR Macdonald and Catherine Gomez of Bethesda by Kenny Maciver, Alex J ‘Moley’ Macleod, and Billy Flower.  Missing from the photo opportunity were Derek ‘Pluto’ Murray and J.A. Smith.
