Stornoway lifeboat RNLB Tom Sanderson launched at lunchtime today (Tuesday 12.45pm) to meet a French fishing vessel in Stornoway harbour, and to take on board a crew member needing medical attention.

The French trawler FV Sandettie called the French Coastguard when a 48-year-old crewman fell ill with stomach pains, while they were fishing north of the Butt of Lewis this morning.

French Coastguard officials contacted Stornoway Coastguard at 9.20am today (Tuesday January 22nd) to request assistance, and the fishing vessel set out towards Stornoway to take the crew member towards help.

He was transferred to the lifeboat by the RNLI volunteer team and landed at the lifeboat pontoon in Stornoway harbour, where Stornoway Coastguard Rescue team were standing by with a crew from Scottish ambulance to take the man to Western Isles Hospital.
