Over the past weekend members from the Hebrides Platoon of the local Army Reserve were joined by other members of C Company, 7 SCOTS in conducting low level training in the Arnish area.

This culminated in a "dawn raid" on positions manned by their full time regular counterparts from 4 SCOTS (The Highlanders).

This is the first time for a number of years that the local Volunteer Reserve unit has conducted exercises on the island – normally they deploy to the mainland or further afield to carry out exercises. It is hoped this will be the first of a number of exercises on Lewis.

Last year 7 SCOTS deployed to Benbecula where members learned to drive quad bikes among other things.

A spokesman for the Hebrides Platoon said the weather was excellent, the terrain was challenging at times and there nothing good to say about the midges, but all involved got something out of the weekend even if it was just black pudding that most of the visitors seemed to leave with while at the same time looking forward to their next visit to Lewis for more full but enjoyable training.
