An intensive road safety campaign around Lewis and Harris over the weekend of July 20th to 22nd left numerous drivers facing penalties.

The Road Policing Unit were on the islands having travelled over from their base at Dingwall and were on the lookout for a variety of offences.

They checked ‘a significant number’ of vehicles – estimated at about 120 – and as a result 13 fixed penalties were issued for speeding, two for drivers with no MOT and one for a driver without insurance.

More serious offences brought drivers heavier penalties. Four were reported to the Procurator Fiscal for speeding offences more than 20 mph above the speed limit. Two were reported because they had no insurance, and two because they had no MOT.

In addition, a prohibition notice was issued to a driver of a defective vehicle and the vehicle taken off the road as a result.
