Emergency teams were called to Eriskay yesterday afternoon (Tuesday August 20th) when a 37-year-old man was reported to be in the water off Bun a Mhullin.

Stornoway Coastguard operations centre received a call from the Scottish Ambulance service at 1.40pm, saying they had had a report of a man in the water.

Coastguard Rescue Teams from Benbecula, Lochboisdale and Griminish were tasked, and police and ambulance crews also attended. Rescue helicopter R948 was also tasked but was returned to base before reaching the scene.

The man was taken from the water and attended by paramedics and a local doctor, but was sadly confirmed to have died. The incident was closed at 6.55pm.

Police Scotland today released a statement which said: “"Police Scotland was made aware of concern for a person recovered from the sea off Bun a Mhullin in Eriskay shortly after 4.35pm on Tuesday.

"Sadly the 37-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. There are no suspicious circumstances and a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

"Police Scotland is grateful for the assistance of the Scottish Ambulance Service, HM Coastguard and members of the public during this incident. Our thoughts are with the man's friends and family."
