A commemorative pin badge commemorating the loss of the Iolaire is to be offered again for Remembrance Day this year, it was announced today (Monday 19 October).

The distinctive badge sold out several times during the centenary commemorations in 2018, with more than 10,000 of the special issue selling, including 1,000 in the first eight hours on sale.

In 2018, sales helped fund local commemorative events including the Iolaire concert and torchlight parade held in Stornoway on 31 December 2018 and the memorial service on 1 January 2019.

Now the Iolaire Centre committee, which is working on legacy from the centenary and on the development of a new permanent marine heritage centre, is to offer the pins again, in conjunction with Poppy Scotland.

In their announcement today, the group said: “Following great demand last year, we are pleased to inform you that the commemorative Iolaire enamel poppy pin is available to purchase this year.

“The pins cost £3 and can be pre-ordered from Poppy Scotland. They are due to dispatch from the 26th October (one week from today) so you will be able to get one before Remembrance Day.

“There will also be some available to purchase locally in Stornoway at the beginning of November. We will provide more information about this nearer the time.”
