The organisers of the Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships are to make bagpipes available to the Sgoil Lionacleit Pipe Band, in an award announced on Friday (16 October).

Twelve sets of bagpipes are to be loaned over three years to E-sgoil by Pipe Bands for Schools, an organisation which helps schools introduce piping and drumming tuition and encourages music making in bands and groups.

The pipes are intended to help Comhairle nan Eilean Siar deliver their music tuition programme to pupils in the Sgoil Lionacleit pipe band.

Sgoil Lionacleit Pipe Band have members from as far south as Barra to as far north as Berneray. In April 2018 they travelled to New York to take part in the annual Tartan Day parade.

In the same year Pipe Bands for Schools introduced a new award, the Eilidh MacLeod Endeavour Award, in memory of the talented piper from Barra who tragically lost her life in the Manchester Arena attack.
