The family history and heritage centre Seallam! in south Harris has had its four-star visitor attraction status confirmed and renewed for a further two years by VisitScotland.

The centre confirmed yesterday (Thursday 7 January) that they can continue to carry the mark of excellence, which recognises the quality of the display and service at their building in Northton.

Seallam! carries exhibitions on local landscape, Harris emigrants and on the culture of St Kilda, as well as offering a genealogical research service, Co Leis Thu? which specialises in Western Isles family history, thanks to the renowned experience of genealogist Bill Lawson.

But Bill and his team are not resting on their laurels, and have a survey currently running at to take stock of the services they provide and look to the future.

The survey says: “We are looking at how we can improve our offer as we are developing an exciting new aspect to the project which will focus on St Kilda, the people, culture and genealogy in particular.”

A new St Kilda – Hiort na Hearadh facility could be developed as part of the St Kilda trail through the Hebrides, and questions are also asked about a café and play/adventure facilities for children.
