Conservative candidate in the Scottish Parliament elections, Mr Gavin Berkenheger is committed to working hard with all local and national stakeholders in revitalising the Hebridean economy on the back of the economic upheaval caused by Covid-19.

Mr Berkenheger highlighted the tourism sector as requiring immediate emphasis and support at a time of year when the islands would be starting to welcome visitors.

He said, “ The local tourism and domestic economy have suffered immensely over the past 12 months and if it wasn’t for the UK governments various assistance packages to assist our businesses and local enterprises then I fear it could have been a lot worse.

"The benefit of the broad shoulders of support from being part of the Union, something the Nationalists won’t like to admit!”

"We need to do all we can to ensure that hotels, B&B’s, restaurants, businesses, attractions etc are all assisted and informed over the next few weeks and as soon as travel restrictions allow, as I believe we must do all we can to convey that the islands are open for business to the rest of the UK as so many livelihoods here depend on it.

"Also and dare I mention again, our need for two new ferries!"

Meanwhile, ballot papers for postal voters in Na h-Eileanan an Iar have arrived on doormats, ready for the Scottish Parliament election on Thursday 6 May 2021.

Malcolm Burr, Constituency Returning Officer, said: “When you receive your postal voting pack, make sure you read and follow the instructions carefully before completing your ballot papers. Don’t forget to include your date of birth and signature on the postal voting statement.  Follow the instructions in the pack to make sure your vote counts”

“Postal ballot papers must be received by the Returning Officer by 10pm on Thursday 6 May 2021.  As soon as you have completed your ballot papers and postal vote statement place it in the envelope provided and return it to make sure that it is received in good time.”
