Police in the Western Isles have issued a reminder to drivers of lorries and large vehicles, after reports that the weight limit on Bernera Bridge has been exceeded.
The bridge connecting Lewis to the Isle of Bernera currently has a 7.5 tonne weight limit, put in place by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar in response to structural concerns.
Work is currently underway on a new bridge, but there have been reports of heavier vehicles, including removal lorries, seen using the crossing.
A police spokesperson said: “Road traffic signs including weight limits do have the force of regulations and it is an offence under the road traffic act to fail to comply with them.
“More importantly, vehicles of a heavier weight could compromise the safety of the bridge, yourself and anyone else using it. Please be aware of this weight restriction and act accordingly.”
