A last burst of activity from volunteers put Leverhulme Community Hub on track for a sudden opening ceremony yesterday afternoon (Saturday 3 July).
Rachel Macdonald, a former headmistress at Leverhulme Memorial School, cut the ribbon at the new laundrette in the building at 3.30pm on Saturday, and the building is now officially open.
Equipped with coin-operated washing and drying machines, the new facility in Leverburgh has been carefully designed to allow for safe social distancing, with users asked to wear face masks while inside and to wipe down the machines after use.
And as work continues on preparing other spaces in the building for a gym and charity shop, the board members had a simple message for people who have washing to do.
They said: “Enjoy! Doing your washing is now fun!”
