The second of two Gaelic cultural festival days for around 40 children was held recently in Uig.
‘Feis Uig 2021’ took place at either end of the summer holidays and built on the previous success of ‘Blasasd Feis Uig’.
A spokesperson for the event said: “It was fantastic to see and hear so many enthusiastic children enjoying themselves at this year’s Feis.”
“The first day’s events were held outside, the second, in the Community Hall. And we thank Elaine and the UCCA committee for the use of the hall.
“Our amazing tutors, Carole Millar, Katie MacKenzie, Noel Eadie and Laura Eaton Lewis greatly encouraged the children to enjoy the varied experiences, of Gaelic singing, Clarsach, Fiddle, Guitar, Banjo and Ukele. Tuition was in Gaelic and English.”
Katie Graham and the creative and talented officers of Comunn na Gaidhlig inspired the children to have a fun time during their Arts & Crafts workshops which the children really enjoyed.
And the energetic and innovative, sporting activities organised by local volunteers led by Sorley Halbert were a big hit.
Those who took part said the help, guidance and encouragement received from Calum Alex MacMilan and Peigi Ann MacLeod, Feisean nan Gaidheal was greatly appreciated.
The intergenerational community spirit and competitiveness of Uig was clearly seen at Feis Uig, in the throwing of the ‘rocket’ where a senior citizen of Bhaltos excelled himself!
The organisers thanked supporters including Creative Scotland, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Comunn na Gàidlig, ‘Na Daraich Bheaga Project’, Tesco, Scottish Coop for all their financial and material help for Fèis Uig 2021.
Some of the children who took part said “Bha suid math!” (“That was good!”) and “Tuilleadh, mas e do thoil e!” (“More please!”).
“Bha mi air mo dhòigh cuireadh fhaighinn gu Fèis Uig 2021, agus chòrd e rium gu mòr a chlann agus na saor-thoilich a choinneachadh. `S e feasgar air leth a bh’ ann le spòrs, geamaichean is ceòl. Bha e gu h-àraid math clann aig diofar aoisean fhaicinn, uile a’ bruidhinn ri chèile sa Ghàidhlig.”
(“I was delighted to be invited up to Fèis Uig 2021, and I really enjoyed meeting the kids and the volunteers. It was a lovely afternoon with fun and games and music. It was especially great to see kids of all ages together and speaking in Gaelic.”) P A Shields, Feisean nan Gaidheal
Building on the success of Feis Uig 2021, the ‘Na Daraich Bheaga -Seinn and Clarsach Classes continue each Thursday during the school term by zoom complemented by face-to-face workshops at the October, Christmas and Easter breaks.
