Rangers fan Dan Crossley of Callanish had a challenge ahead of him even after the big match in Spain last Wednesday (18 May) – to get home for his Shen’s birthday.

As big as the Rangers-Seville clash was, it was not big enough to make Dan forget that his Shen, Donald ‘Putan’ Ferguson, was celebrating his 100th birthday, with a big family gathering planned for Friday night.

In a tweet late on Friday night Dan admitted he’d been deflated since he and his dad, Jimmy, witnessed the Rangers defeat, but making it home to join the family in time for the party had made up for it all.

Dan and Jimmy travelled across Europe via Porto in Spain, Billund in Denmark and Gothenburg in Sweden to get to Edinburgh and a flight home to Stornoway.

They reached Lewis at 4pm on Friday – with just over an hour in hand before joining four generations of the family in the big celebration.

His picture showed the view from Shen’s living room later that evening, with a brandy, a telegram from the Queen and a view of Shen beside the fire.
