Calum Macdonald, aged 26, is about to complete his 3rd year of BEng (Hons) Energy Engineering and was recently awarded a £1000 prize for ‘Best Engineer’ in the UHI Business Awards. Calum has shared his experiences of studying engineering at UHI Outer Hebrides and how his lecturer supported his award winning vertical farming project.
Calum said, “I had been studying History at UHI for a couple year but didn’t find it a right fit for me. I took a chance and a change in direction by starting an Engineering degree and quickly found a passion for engineering.”
Calum’s award winning project idea was to develop modular vertical farming units to allow people to grow fruit and veg in their own space. The aim is to provide this at an affordable price for people to help reduce their reliance on food grown far away and to help people get back in touch with how food reaches the table.
UHI Outer Hebrides Interim Principal Sue Macfarlane said, “Here at the college we understand not all paths are straight and everyone is different. What we do is support everyone to succeed at what they want to do. We provide students with the opportunities to study and gain industry experience with expert lecturer support throughout.”
The College is currently working with Harland and Wolf to facilitate 12 new apprenticeships in Arnish and support the growth of local industry. Head of Engineering Roddy Ferguson commented, “UHI Outer Hebrides have always worked closely with local businesses to offer new opportunities and to meet the training needs of the local workforce. We have a range of courses in Mechanical, Electrical, Fabrication/Welding and Energy Engineering where anyone can begin or develop an engineering career. That is why we are offering taster sessions at the college to come and meet staff, other students and find out more about an engineering career. I invite anyone who has an interest to come along to chat with us this Friday at the college.”
