Firefighters in Stornoway rolled up their sleeves for a Saturday charity car wash earlier this month - and on Tuesday night (July 19) the fruits of their voluntary labours were handed over to a local charity.

They were able to donate a very welcome £800 to WIAMH – the Western Isles Association for Mental Health.

As well as being a fun fundraising event, the firefighters wanted to share a very serious message about fire safety in the home.

Each year fire destroys lives, something firefighters see regularly and by taking some precautions this risk can be minimized. While their car was being pampered, visitors had the chance book a free home fire safety visit.

Firefighter Andrew Maciver said: “All monies raised will provide a real boost to the charity and I wish to thank all the firefighters who were using their free time to take part in this worthwhile event."

The emergency services in Stornoway are planning a major fund-raising event for Saturday August 27,
