Food shortages on the Western Isles are not our fault, CalMac Ferries said last night (Wednesday August 10)

This came in response to what they termed "incorrect reports" that recent CalMac disruption has been responsible for food shortages in the Western Isles.

CalMac said that islanders should please note that while the main route between Uig, Lochmaddy and Tarbert "was off service for a time last week, alternative routes to and from the Western Isles were still operating, allowing essential deliveries to continue to be made.".

Robbie Drummond, Managing Director of CalMac, said: “During this latest disruption, we shipped all the food deliveries we were asked to take. We prioritise food supplies and nothing was left on the mainland. Any issues with food supplies may have been caused by other reasons, such as supermarket supply chain issues.”

Customers in supermarkets throughout the islands encountered shortages of items as deliveries arrived at different times of the day or week than normal.
