The mammoth task of tracing emigrants who left the islands 100 years ago – or more – is under way, and Stornoway Historical Society has issued a call for information from descendants.
It’s homecoming year in the islands in 2023, as a century is marked since the huge displacement of island people to Canada, the USA and other destinations around the world.
Yesterday (Tuesday 22 November) SHS said: “In common with other historical societies and Comainn Eachdraidh in the Western Isles, we hope to commemorate those who emigrated from these islands in the 1920s and earlier.
“Any information from you will help us stage an exhibition over the summer months and contribute to our archives.
"We are also helping with the Leaving Home exhibition, which will be in the Town Hall from the end of April 2023.
“We would like to record all possible information on emigrants (whether they remained in their new country or not) from the Stornoway, Laxdale and Sandwick areas, in particular.
“We are looking for emigrants' names and addresses, places where they settled, jobs, family, photographs and documentation.”
