Castlebay has been named the second-best Scottish holiday destination in a Scotsman poll, pipped for the top spot by Plockton.

Barra’s capital was up against stiff competition, beating off Tobermory and Millport, ranked third and fourth, respectively.

The poll for the best staycation destination in 2023 was based on reader recommendations. They came up with a total of 13 seaside towns that are hot tips for vacationers.

Also in the top five was St Andrews.

The top picks were compiled from the suggestions the publication’s Facebook followers made after they were asked to identify the best seaside resort they had been to in Scotland.

Commented the Scotsman: “Luckily for all of us, we’re spoilt for choice when looking for picturesque seaside getaways, so if you’re looking for a new year’s getaway, Scotland is the perfect location to let your hear [sic] down.”

The remaining picks in descending order were North Berwick, Luce Bay, Montrose, Cruden Bay, Glenelg, Pennan, Largs, and Gardenstown.
