Harris golfer Kenny ‘Kuna’ Morrison, is making plans for his big trip to the USA – and he’s asking for the support of sports enthusiasts to make it possible.

Kenny, of Scalpay, has been named as vice-captain of Scottish Disability Golf Team Europe, the European representative team taking on the USA in the Phoenix Cup challenge in California this August.

At the time of the team announcement in October, a spokesperson for his home club at Scarista said: “I am sure I speak for everyone here at Isle of Harris Golf Club in saying how proud of Kenny we all are and wishing him and the whole team every success out in the States.”

The Phoenix Cup is the world's first fully inclusive team international for golfers with a disability and is the only pan-disability team golf event in the world.

It’s modelled on the Ryder/Solheim Cup, where disabled golf groups from around the world are invited to compete, developing and promoting the sport for players of any age, with any type of disability.

Courses played in August will include the Alisal Ranch golf course in Solvang, California, and the Sandpiper Golf Course in Santa Barbara.

Since selection, Kenny has set out to raise the money he needs to travel for the competition, to be played from 28 to 30 August over three courses in California.

Team Europe will comprise 14 players, each expected to cover much of the travel, golf, accommodation and extra costs themselves.

Kenny’s launched a gofundme page at https://www.gofundme.com/f/Kenny-Morrison-phoenix-cup-2023-usa-v-europe and is aiming for £1,000 to cover his own expenses.

So far (1600, 26-01-2023) £530 has been raised of a £1000 target.

But, he says: “I am looking to raise as much money as possible and hope to be in a position to not only fund the trip for myself, but also help SDGC Team Europe reduce the costs for all players.”

The pictures show Kenny at his home club in Scarista, and one of the Californian courses, which will surely feel like home to him (Isle of Harris Golf Club).
