The North Uist Highland Games are in danger of being cancelled this year unless more volunteers step forward to help, it is being warned.

With three key committee positions remaining vacant after the organising committee’s annual general meeting, an extraordinary general meeting has been called for tomorrow (Tuesday, January 31) at 8 pm in the Claddach Kirkibost Centre to rescue this summer’s games.

A Vice President, a Piping Secretary, and a Dancing Secretary are urgently required.

Issuing an online appeal for volunteers, the Highland Games stated: “At our AGM in November, it was raised that the committee should have representation from every district in North Uist, and the current districts competing for the Duke of Hamilton Trophy are Paible, Sollas, Carinish, Lochmaddy, Claddach and Berneray.

"At present, we have no committee members from the Carinish and Berneray Districts, and we would urge members of the community to join the committee for the future of the Games.

“The Games provide a valuable outlet for local businesses to showcase their products and services to the community and visitors as well as being a great social occasion in the Uist calendar.”

The Highland Games are scheduled to take place on Friday, July 21.
