A helicopter involved in the NATO exercise Joint Warrior sparked an emergency this afternoon (Tuesday April 16th) as it headed for Stornoway Airport with engine trouble.
The Royal Navy helicopter, ZJ164, has been supporting the military operation in the Minch with movement of service and civilian personnel. This afternoon at around 4.30pm it reported engine problems and headed for Stornoway.
The main road to Point was closed at either side of the airport approach and emergency services including Stornoway Coastguard helicopter and fire appliances were called to support ground-based services at the airport.
The scheduled air service to and from Edinburgh was cancelled and the service to Glasgow delayed by just under an hour as services on the ground readied themselves for a possible emergency.
The helicopter was reported to have landed safely at just before 5pm.
Picture of the helicopter affected is by Jason Spinks and was taken earlier this week.
