Barra RNLI Lifeboat was called to assist during a battle to save a fisherman pulled unconscious from the water yesterday afternoon (Wednesday July 24th).
Stornoway Coastguard control centre received a call at 12.53pm saying that a fisherman had been found unconscious and immersed in water on rocks in Loch Carnan, South Uist.
The 57-year-old man was believed to have fallen from a creel vessel. He was pulled from the water by the crew of another fishing vessel. Sea and weather conditions at the time were not difficult.
Barra RNLI lifeboat, Stornoway Coastguard helicopter R948 and Coastguard Rescue Teams from Lochboisdale and Benbecula were all called to the scene, as were paramedics from Scottish Ambulance.
Despite the prompt action of all concerned, the man was sadly found to have died.
Police are now investigating the circumstances of the death, although they do not believe it to be suspicious.
