The second annual Tong scarecrow competition is set to start on Monday (July 29th) and there’s already an early contribution in the village.

For a week, villagers can construct their own scarecrows in gardens, crofts and verges around the village, entering the contest for a donation to Tong Recreation Association of just £5. On Friday next week, judges will carefully evaluate the entries before awarding first second and third prizes.

Last year the entries became quite an attraction, with drivers visiting Tong just to get a look at some of the weird and wonderful creations. They included a pair of hapless builders, a haybale CalMac ferry and a trio of superhero scarecrows, who won the competition for Adam Finlayson of Springside.

Even before the official opening date, the contest is already off to a flying start, thanks to the Murray family of Springside, who obviously know the way we do it in the Western Isles!
