New figures released after a Freedom of Information (FoI) request have shown that the number of recorded physical assaults on NHS staff in the Western Isles has hit an all-time high.

The FoI response, which was initiated by the Scottish Conservatives, show that there were 60 recorded physical assaults on staff in NHS Western Isles in 2018/19, almost double the number recorded in 2017/18.

The previous record stood at 58 recorded physical assaults in 2015/16.

There was also an increase in recorded verbal incidents between 2017/18 and 2018/19, going from 40 to 49.

Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron has called for more protection for local NHS workers. Donald Cameron MSP said:  “These figures are deeply worrying, and it is of particular concern that the number of physical incidents has increased so dramatically. Hospitals can be stressful places, and sometimes people can lash out through no fault of their own. But it is clear that our hardworking NHS staff need better support and protection from such incidents, and I call on the SNP Government to work with NHS Western Isles to make sure that happens."
