Gaeldom's most important event - the Royal National Mod - begins in Stornoway later today.

Thousands of visitors will descend on Lewis over the forthcoming week, to either participate in or soak up the atmosphere of the premier Gaelic festival.

Proceedings kick off tonight with the annual presentation of the Gaelic Ambassador of the Year award, at 4.30pm in the Town Hall.

At 6.15pm, a torchlight procession organised by the local committee will march from the Town Hall to the Sports Centre, officially marking the opening of the Mod in Stornoway.

This will be followed by a concert headlined by Daimh and the Mischa Macpherson Trio at 8pm.

Tomorrow, the Shinty Cup will be a real highlight, as Lewis and Skye compete for the coveted trophy at 2pm on Shawbost Pitch.

The Lewis and Harris Select will face off against Glasgow Island AFC in the Mod football cup at Smith Avenue, at 2.15pm.

In the evening, Lewis Sports Centre will host a spectacular night of music as the 'Ar Canan's Ar Ceol' performance will see 200 island performers take to the stage in a specially assembled traditional orchestra of boxes, fiddles, pipers, guitars, brass, choirs, and Highland dancers.

This event starts at 7.30pm.
