Morning newspapers could be on sale again in the Western Isles from next year, it's been revealed.

Loganair take over the island air franchise from Flybe in September 2017, and have vowed to look into getting papers delivered to the islands early-morning.

Representatives of Loganair met with officials from Comhairle nan Eilean Siar's transportation committee yesterday.

Transportation Chairman John Mackay said that the Comhairle had raised the question of morning newspaper deliveries and Loganair had agreed to look at the request.

Mr Mackay said: "The Comhairle is enthusiastic about the return of morning deliveries as it believes this will boost the economy of the town by attracting people in the mornings, and help the shops in the countryside, too."

He said that Loganair had welcomed the Council's comments but had pointed out that, of course, they could do nothing until they took over the franchise next year.

Jonathan Hinkles, managing director of Loganair said: “Newspaper deliveries to the Western Isles were raised by councillors at Thursday’s meeting and I outlined Loganair would be prepared to visit the issue once again in the correct circumstances.”
