Vandals have seriously damaged the Lady Matheson Monument in Lews Castle Grounds.

According to Western Isles Police, the incident involved a red aerosol spray and occurred between the morning of Monday December 4th at 9am and 11am the following day.

They have appealed for information about the attack, asking people to contact them via 101 quoting reference number NH4702/17 or to phone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

The attack involved climbing to the top of the statue to spray paint on the face of the figure.

Efforts have already been made during the week to clean up the damage - see views above and below.

The monument which had fallen into disrepair during the 20th Century was restored at a cost of more than £100,000 and reopened with a formal ceremony in 2006 attended by members of the Matheson family related to Sir James Matheson in whose honour the memorial was raised by his widow Lady Matheson after his death in 1878.
