Islanders may wonder what it is that community councils actually do – and in five areas, no one at all can be bothered to even start trying to find out.

No nominations were received for five Community Councils, says Comhairle nan Eilean Siar – and only one community council – Airidhantuim – has enough nominations to actually need an election, and they have asked that none of the 14 nominees be excluded by amending their constitution to enable the Community Council to have 14 members.

The five areas with no nominations at all are: Barvas and Brue; Eriskay; Kinloch; Laxdale; and Ness.

In a whole range of other areas, too few people were nominated.

  • Back – only one nomination
  • Bernera – five nominations
  • Carloway – only one nomination
  • Castlebay – five nominations
  • Lochboisdale - only one nomination
  • Pairc – two nominations
  • Sandwick – three nominations
  • Scalpay – three nominations
  • Stornoway – three nominations
  • Tong – three nominations

However, following the close of nominations for Community Councillors recently, 15 Community Councils were actually established.

The full list of nominations is available here.

A further round of nominations is being held for the Community Councils which did not receive sufficient nominations to be established.

This nomination period will close on Tuesday 17 October 2023 at 4pm.
