A night-time rescue late on Saturday (10 February) brought a sick crewman to Lewis from far out in the Atlantic.

HM Coastguard’s maritime rescue co-ordination centre (MRCC) at Goat Island in Stornoway took a call from a bulk carrier at 8.11pm on Saturday, saying that they had a crewman who was unwell and needed medical attention.

Search and rescue helicopter R948 was despatched to the vessel’s position, 130 nautical miles southwest of Stornoway, and recovered the casualty, bringing him to Stornoway airport.

From there he was transferred by ambulance to Western Isles Hospital for treatment and the helicopter crew were stood down at 12.32am.
