South Uist is waking up this morning (Tues, April 2) to survey the damage caused overnight by an out-of-control moor fire.

Firefighters were called out as the muirburn around the Askernish area was creeping towards neighbouring houses. The flames were mainly concentrated on Askernish Hill and the quarry area.

Despite their best efforts, the fire was still burning well into the night and still ablaze after 3 am.

The muirburn was fanned after stronger than expected winds began gusting. It is believed that some livestock in the path of the fire had to be moved to safety.
