A special memorial mass is to be held in Stornoway later this month, for the soul of former parish priest Canon Roddy Johnstone.

Father Roddy, as he was known to his parishioners, served Lewis and Harris for more than eight years, during which time he was promoted to the position of Vicar General – second-in-command to Bishop Brian McGee in the Diocese of Argyll and the Isles.

He passed away after a short and sudden illness at the age of 69, on 16 March at Fort William.

Tonight (Tuesday 2 April) his remains will be received into St Columba’s Cathedral, Oban at 6.30pm, in preparation for his requiem mass in the cathedral tomorrow at 10am. Following the mass he will be interred in Glen Nevis cemetery.

Canon William Maclean, the parish priest at the church of Our Holy Redeemer in Stornoway, has also planned a memorial mass for Fr Roddy on Tuesday 16 April at 7pm.

Fr William said: “That day will mark a month since his death. I am sure that many people from Stornoway will want to go to something to remember him. We will have mass at 7pm, and afterwards everyone will be invited to have some refreshments.”
