A 40-year-old Land Rover is going full circle next week by returning to Barra, where it was previously owned.

Emrys Kirby, a Land Rover magazine journalist, and his wife plan to drive the classic Series lll Land Rover from Lancaster to Barra at the end of next week.

But before their visit, Emrys is keen to uncover details of the Land Rover’s time on the island.

Says Emrys: “I restored it three years ago and to celebrate its 40th birthday, we are doing a Highlands and Islands tour, visiting significant places in the vehicle’s history. I’m just wondering if there is anyone in the group [Isles of Barra & Vatersay Information] who might recognise it. It was built green and was painted blue possibly in the time it was on Barra.”

Restored to its original 1984 condition

Emrys, who grew up near Fort William bought the Series lll in 1995 in Strontian. He believes the off-roader was sold as new from Wilson’s Garage in Oban and belonged to Allan MacKechnie, the owner of the Claredon Hotel in Oban during the mid to late 1980s.

After that, it changed hands and was in Barra before returning to Oban and ultimately to Strontian.
