Man-of-the-match award for Mike Schouten

Stornoway Rugby Club have hailed an ‘unbelievable performance’ by their players, coming up with a 95-12 home win over Moray RFC 2nd XV on Saturday (18 May).

The match was played in bright sunshine at Bayhead, giving spectators a feast of set pieces, tries and conversions to finish the 2023/24 season in style.

It was third time unlucky for Moray after three previous attempts at the match. Moray were unable to field a team on 4 or 11 May – five points deducted each time – and one match was postponed without a match official.

This weekend they were still only able to muster a squad of 13 to come across the Minch, but a couple of Stornoway subs pulled on red and white jerseys, allowing the game to be played at 15 a side.

A Stornoway team spokesperson said: “Fair play to them – and for managing to grab themselves a couple of tries at the end of the match.

“Thanks to the faithful who came along as always to support the boys and congrats to Mike Schouten (player of the year) on man of the match.”

All the scorers were: tries Mike Schouten 3, Matt Barker 2, Dean Drummond 2, Alick Graham, Rylan Jackson, Alex Mackay, Drew Maynard, Calum May, Joe Ross and Sam Ross; conversions Farrell 12 from 14, and one penalty.

Stornoway Men finish the season with a winning run of matches after weather-related frustration early in the season.

They close exactly halfway up the Highlands and Islands Conference table of the Caledonia North Region League Division 2, with a creditable seven wins, 498 points scored and 40 points earned from 12 matches played.

Mike is pictured with his reward as man of the match, and the team shown after another win, over Inverness Craig Dunain, in the final away match of the season in April (Stornoway RFC).
